Dublin Bus

Dublin Bus - project site

The beta for this site is under further development and will be put online as soon as ready.

This was started as a project in web usability as part of the System & User Interaction Development Interaction module while in DCU. It was inspired by the lack of usable timetable information on Dublin bus. It has been created using the Google Maps API. During the course of the project, I first became acquainted with Javascript and, more importantly, AJAX. The site information is loaded asynchronously from XML files containing the route information.

In the creation of the site, the usability guidelines as laid out in Human Computer Interaction by Dr A Serengul Smith were used. The User-Centered System Design process, as described by Dr Serengul, was then used to complete the project. This process requires that designers follow a number of steps.

The main focus at each stage was iteration, allowing the system to be designed with the user's needs alway in focus. I hope to continue developing the site into a truly usable system that will provide accessible information to Dublin Bus users.

Through the creation of this site and the report which accompanied it, I feel that I have gained an important skill, that is the necessity of keeping the user at the centre of any system design.

Mad for Muffins

This was a project created as part of the e-Commerce Infrastructure while in college. The project was to design and implement an online shop that included a shopping basket, product description and online payment method.

The site was implemented using a server side scripting language, PHP, MySQL database and a valid XHTML web page. In order to complete the project, it was also necessary to install and maintain a development server on my computer.

Camara Moodle

Camara Moodle Camara

This is a project I undertook to redesign the moodle site of the charity to match the appearance of its main website. Moodle is a course managment system that allows teachers and administrators to put course content online in an environment that is easily organised and tailored to the students needs. In order to complete this project I worked closely with a co-ordinator in the charity to find out what was needed for the site. I then attempted to recreate the appearance of the main website on the moodle site. I was required to update my PHP skills and use a test server to run the site from home.

This was my first website completed as part of the Web Design and Implementation given by Hyowon Lee and Dr Cathal Gurrin. This project was to be completed using the best practise in web design namely XHTML and CSS.
